A Comprehensive R4 ride review

"In summary, the Renovo has been jaw-dropping impressive with its stunning ability to absorb bumps and provide a smooth ride while also remaining stiff and nearly flex-free when standing on the pedals."

R4 VS. Cervelo carbon SLC

" the R4 was noticeably smooth and quiet, where Fangio (my Cervelo SLC) is loud and mean. Worse than that, Fangio bites... At 18 pounds, the Renovo might seem heavy on paper, but the weight seemed trivial to me, if not an advantage...it climbs just as well as any top-end carbon bike."

Sea Otter Feedback:

Cycelicious rides and reviews the R4:

...this wood laminate bike seems to do a superb job of absorbing road bumps while still giving me a lively ride. The R4 pursuit provides a much smoother ride than any carbon bike I’ve tried...

Roadbike Action Magazine:

"As always the Sea Otter pits were brimming with lots of cool bikes, but the crown jewels of the weekend assuredly belonged to the beautifully hand crafted wood bikes built by Renovo."

Road Bike Review Forums:

"I saw the Renovo bikes at Sea Otter 2010 and had a short ride on the R4 and R2. First impression was the ride was sweet. Not dead or lifeless. Good vibration moderation. Not sluggish. I did not have the opportunity to climb but overall very favorable. The frames are beautiful heirloom worthy pieces. Weight is comparable to steel and titanium frames."

 The Pandurban Commuter

 The Pandurban Max

Designed for the mean streets, the rugged Pandurban tames unruly urban pavement with a smooth, near-suspension ride. It accomplishes this without the weight of suspension thanks to its lightweight, super-tough, laminated bamboo frame. Complimenting the frame is a graceful steel fork that laughs at potholes and railroad tracks. Disc brakes deliver outstanding stopping power even when wet, and the kickstand lets you park anywhere. Reflective sidewall, puncture-resistant 700c x 32mm tires keep the air in, and they deliver a sure-footed grip without the drag of fat tires. Shifting gears is quick and effortless for either drivetrain option with the twist grip shifter. The Pandurban delivers you and your stuff with such confidence, style, comfort and performance, you’ll be inventing errands just to hang out with it.

It’s available with two drivetrain options and two levels of equipment to match your mission.

Two Pandurban Customer Reviews

One of our customers has a blog wherein he describes his experience with the Pandurban, and another customer chimes in in the comments. And yes, we did go through a tough period causing both of these customers to receive their bikes unusually late, but as someone points out in the comments, not unexpected from a tiny company handmaking a complex and custom product, but fortunately, we've moved past the problems that caused those delays. Anyway, the reviews are here.

The Pandurban Frame:   $1950

The Fully Equipped, All Season Pandurban Max.

This Pandurban is built for commuting in the worst conditions Portland has to offer; rain, darkness, slush and traffic. The high-intensity LED headlight turns on automatically when you ride, and stays on several minutes after you stop.  It has full fenders to keep the wet, mud and dirt at bay, and a serious, heavy-duty rack that sports a wide range of accessory top bags and panniers to carry as much stuff as you need. It’s available in caramelized laminated bamboo or hickory, with two drivetrain options.

Price with:
9 Sp. SRAM X7 Derailleur,                    $3200
Shimano Alfine 8 Sp. Internal Hub:      $3400

The Pandurban Lite:

The same smooth ride and reliable, bullet-proof character as the Pandurban Max, without:

  1. Fenders
  2. Rack
  3. Internal hub generator, lights

Some folks don’t need these things, so without them the Pandurban Lite weighs several pounds less than the Max, which gives it a more sporty nature; just grab your bag, blinkies and go. Available in natural or caramelized bamboo, with two drivetrain options.

Price with:
9 sp. SRAM X7 Derailleur,                       $2900
Shimano Alfine 8 sp. Internal Hub:         $3200

Drivetrain Options:

These drivetrain options have a similar wide range of gears to handle hills or hurry-up, as needed.

  • Shimano Alfine 8 speed internal hub transmission enables you to shift gears while stopped and encloses the entire gear train inside the rear hub, reducing maintenance; a real benefit if you ride through dirt or mud.
  • SRAM 9 speed rear derailleur. This is a standard rear derailleur, also low maintenance in clean conditions. Rain or wet is no problem.  It weighs about 2.5 lbs less than the internal hub.
